(Cynthia) CJ Arnold’s journey from corporate America to becoming a champion for Indigenous communities is a powerful story of resilience, determination, and purpose. With a background in public relations and media, CJ’s career has always been about building connections and amplifying voices. However, it wasn’t until she stepped away from the corporate world in 2015 that she discovered her true calling: uniting cultures and uplifting Indigenous voices through art, fashion, and economic development.
That same year, CJ experienced an epiphany that would forever change the trajectory of her life. A meditation session led her to a life-altering vision: a red-tailed hawk, symbolizing unity, cultural preservation, and vision. This moment of clarity deepened when CJ traveled to Pine Ridge, the home of Crazy Horse, a revered leader in the American Indian community who adorned himself with red-tailed hawk feathers. While there, she began working on a project to build community centers for the tribe. Although the project didn’t come to fruition, it became a turning point in her life, leading to the creation of 1 Earth United.
Through her company, CJ is dedicated to supporting Indigenous peoples by connecting them to global markets and fostering cultural exchange. 1 Earth United not only amplifies underrepresented voices but also inspires hope and pride within marginalized communities, empowering them to thrive and share their heritage with the world.
“I get the most reward from connecting with Indigenous people,” CJ says with heartfelt sincerity. “There’s beauty in their love and respect for the earth and their traditions. My goal is to share these cultures with the world and create opportunities for these communities to thrive.”
Her transformative journey was accelerated by WomenVenture’s Small Business Essentials course. “WomenVenture opened our eyes to the bigger picture and broadened our ability to look at things more strategically,” she shares. The course not only provided CJ with the tools to refine her vision but also introduced her to a network of supportive mentors and entrepreneurs who believed in her mission.
Through 1 Earth United, CJ has partnered with talented Indigenous artists and creators, helping them gain the recognition they deserve. Designers like Redberry Woman, a Grammy winner celebrated for sharing her heritage, are among those who have had their voices amplified through CJ’s platform. These collaborations not only elevate Indigenous voices but challenge global perceptions, showcasing the depth and richness of their contributions to a wider audience.
Running a business hasn’t been without challenges. Bootstrapping and navigating funding hurdles have tested CJ’s resolve, but her passion and perseverance keep her going. She continues to leverage WomenVenture’s resources and credits the “Get Funded” event in 2024 for helping her establish invaluable business relationships. “I met someone at that event I would have never met anywhere else,” CJ recalls. “We’ve continued our business relationship, and it’s been invaluable.”
WomenVenture’s guidance has been transformational for CJ. “They helped us think about how to effectively build an audience and provided tools that have made a lasting difference,” she explains. These insights have empowered CJ to create a thriving platform for Indigenous communities to share their heritage and succeed on their own terms.
CJ’s story is a testament to the power of persistence, learning, and believing in something bigger than yourself. Her advice? “Take an entrepreneurial class. You can never stop learning, and the more you learn, the better equipped you’ll be to face the challenges ahead.”
